Synthesis and Characterisation of Mixed Chelate Complexes Of Cobalt (II) with Various Schiff’s Base Ligands
Abstract
In the present study, six mixed ligand Co (II) complexes of various Schiff’s bases such as Salicylaldehyde ethylenediamine (Sal2 en), Salicylaldehyde Orthoaminophenol (SalOAP), and Salicylaldehyde Semicarbazone (SalSc); along with ligands such as pyridine and SCN were synthesised. The resulting complexes were suggested to have formulae: (1) [NH4 ]2 [Co (SalOAP) (SCN) 2 ]; (2) [NH4 ]2 [Co (Sal2 en) (SCN) 2 ]; (3) [NH4 ][Co2 (Sal.Sc) 2 (SCN) ]; (4) [Co (Sal OAP) (py) 3 ]; (5) [Co (Sal2 en) (py) 2 ]; and (6) [Co (Sal.Sc) (py) 3 ]. The formulae of the complexes were based on the characterisation such as its molecular weight, conductivity measurements, melting point/stability, magnetic susceptibility, UV spectroscopy and Infrared spectral studies. Interesting results were obtained, revealing different coordination and chirality of the central metal ion. Four of the synthesised complexes show hexa coordinated geometry: one complex showing penta coordinated geometry; and one complex was found to be dimeric with SCN- as a bridging ligand having a tetra coordinated geometry around each Cobalt atom.
