Abstract

Interactions between tetraalkylammonium ions and inorganic anions can be used to develop methods of separation for inorganic anions by any separation technique. From the ion association and thermodynamic data, capillary electrophoretic (CE) technique can be easily designed to effect separation of inorganic anions samples. Using CE mode such as capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) to investigate weak ion association between inorganic anions and the pairing cations also furnishes data to evaluate association theories like Bjerrum’s theory. Findings show that the increase in association constant Kass as the dielectric constant decreased is not exponential as maintained by the Bjerrum’s theory. The increase in Kass as the dielectric constant decreased approximates a linear relationship, suggesting factors other than dielectric constant influence ion association. In addition, thermodynamic parameters like medium effect and Gibbs free energy of transfer, obtained from data generated in studying ion interaction by CE, can be used to explain stability of ions and Kass trends. Medium effect and Gibbs free energy of transfer generally show that a modest increase in Kass in aqueous-organic media is due to combined instability of anion and/ or cation outweighing instability of the ion associate.
