Abstract
This paper interrogates the complexities that come with translating picture books in Tanzania between 2001 and 2012. A sample of four tittles written in both Kiswahili and English that are available in bookstores were selected for study. It was important that the study should involve books available in bookstores in Tanzania to ensure that these books are functional, hence making the study useful and applicable. The polysystem theory is employed to build the framework for analysing the peripheral position that Tanzanian children literature may occupy at both the national and global systems, while the Hermeneutics methodology aid in the study and interpretation of the meanings of texts. In addition, a semiotic analysis is applied as texts and illustrations are studied for meaningful interpretations of the books. The findings suggest that the translation process from Kiswahili to English is a complex process that is clouded by tensions characterising binaries in the polysystem.
