Abstract
Bottom reflection of short-wave radiation was investigated using measurements taken from a platform in a shallow tidal lagoon on the eastern coast of Zanzibar, the Chwaka bay. Measurements were taken from 18 January to 9 February, 1996. The investigation was facilitated using a simple model of shallow water reflectance. The presumption that bottom reflection plays a significant role in the heat budget of the bay has been found to be incorrect. The computed mean value of the flux due to bottom reflection during this period was only of the order of 2Wm-2, and it is unlikely that variations in bottom sediment types and water depths would significantly increase the flux.
